During the summertime, several factors can increase driving hazards. These include tire-related issues, visibility problems, and general vehicle maintenance concerns.
Tire Safety: Heat-induced gas combustion inside tires can lead to explosions, especially when combined with welding, heating rim components, external fires, or excessive brake use [1]. Tire explosions are more violent than blowouts, potentially propelling tire, rim, and axle components up to 500 meters (1500 ft) [1]. To mitigate this, avoid approaching warm tires and maintain a safe distance [1]. Ensure proper tire servicing by trained personnel using correct tools and procedures [1], and always use a self-attaching chuck when inflating tires, standing behind the tread [1].
Visibility: Glare from the sun can significantly reduce visibility. Ensure vehicles operate with headlights on at all times [2]. For construction sites, use appropriate lane control devices and flashing lights or flares to enhance visibility [3]. When material is piled along excavations or trenches, ensure it is adequately illuminated with warning lights or reflective materials to prevent interference with traffic [3].
Vehicle Maintenance: Regular vehicle checks are crucial. Before each shift, inspect service brakes, parking systems, emergency stopping systems, tires, the horn, steering mechanism, coupling devices, seat belts, operating controls, and safety devices [4]. Correct any defects before placing the vehicle in service [4]. Ensure that all equipment on a vehicle is adequately secured when the vehicle is in motion [5].
General Safety: Always wear a seat belt during machine operation to prevent serious injury or death in the event of an accident or machine overturn 16, 17. Be aware of the potential for crushing hazards from falling objects and ensure appropriate guards are installed on the cab 16, 17. When operating machinery, sound the horn before starting the engine, traveling, or swinging the upper structure to alert people nearby [6].
Important Safety Note:
Always verify safety information with your organization's specific guidelines and local regulations.
