Welding Safety Checklist

Purpose

This checklist is designed to ensure safety during welding operations by identifying potential hazards and implementing necessary precautions.

Instructions for Use

• Review each item before starting welding operations.
• Mark each item as complete or incomplete.
• Note any corrective actions needed.
• Ensure compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

• Wear flameproof gauntlet gloves and flameproof aprons made of leather or other suitable material [1].
• Use helmets or hand shields during all arc welding or arc cutting operations [2].
• Ensure goggles or suitable eye protection are used during gas welding or oxygen cutting operations [2].

Equipment and Environment

• Ensure welding cables and equipment are clear of passageways, ladders, and stairways [2].
• Secure gas cylinders and welding machines outside confined spaces [3].
• Perform work in a well-ventilated area to prevent accumulation of toxic materials [4].
• Remove paint from surfaces to be welded to avoid generating poisonous gases [5].

Fire Prevention

• Remove or protect combustibles within 35 feet of the work site [6].
• Have a fully charged fire extinguisher available at all times [7].
• Ensure fire watches are available when required [8].

Procedural Checks

• Turn off the engine and remove the key before welding [5].
• Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery terminal [5].
• Attach the welder ground cable within 1 meter from the weld area [5].
• Remove all electrodes from holders when arc welding is suspended [3].

Confined Spaces

• Provide ventilation to prevent toxic material accumulation [4].
• Station an attendant outside to observe and assist in emergencies [3].

Follow-Up Actions

• Document any incomplete items and corrective actions taken.
• Ensure all safety measures are reviewed and updated regularly.
