Construction Site Setup Safety Checklist

This checklist is designed to ensure a safe setup of a construction site before work begins. Complete each item and address any deficiencies before starting work.

I. General Site Conditions

• Housekeeping: Work site is clean and free from slip or trip hazards [1].

• Lighting: Sufficient lighting is provided to enable safe work [1].

• Emergency Lighting: Emergency lighting is available in case of power failure [1].

II. Equipment and Materials

• Pallets: Pallets are loaded, moved, stacked, arranged, and stored safely [1].

• Storage Racks: Racks are designed, constructed, and maintained to support the load and placed on firm foundations [1].

• Material Storage: Supplies and roofing materials are stored at least 2 meters from the roof edge on residential buildings under construction [1].

• Material Weight Distribution: Weight of supplies and roofing materials is uniformly distributed [1].

• Hoses and Piping: Hoses and piping operating under pressure are restrained [3].
  • Corrective Actions:
• Securing Equipment and Materials: Equipment and materials are contained, restrained, or protected to eliminate potential dangers [3].

III. Excavation Safety

• Underground Utilities: Underground utilities are located and marked before excavation begins.

• Excavation Protection: Excavations are protected from collapse using shoring, sloping, or benching systems.

• Egress: Safe access and egress are provided for all excavations.

IV. Scaffold Safety

• Scaffold Inspection: Scaffold components are inspected for damage, corrosion, and missing parts [4].

• Guardrails: Guardrails, midrails, and toeboards are installed on all scaffolds [4].

• Fall Protection: Workers on scaffolds use safety lines and harnesses [4].

V. Electrical Safety

• Power Lines: Survey the job site for hazards such as exposed electrical wires [5].

VI. Mobile Equipment Safety

• Tag Out: Post to the operators controls a "DO NOT OPERATE" tag to warn persons not to start the machine during maintenance [7].

• Work Area: Know the work area! Before operating the machine, carefully survey and record the land and worksite features to prevent the machine from falling or the soil from caving in [7].

VII. Fire Prevention

• Flammables: Do not smoke close to the area and do not use the fire near the area [9].

• Spills: After refueling and lubrication, wipe off the spilled out fuel and oil, etc. immediately [9].

• Work Lights: Use only approved work lights when performing inspection and maintenance procedures to prevent possible fire or explosion [9].

VIII. Structural Stability

• Bracing and Supports: Work is completed on any component designed to support or give added support to a part of the project before proceeding with any work that adds to the load on that part [10].
  • Corrective Actions:
• Wall Bracing: A free standing wall of brick, concrete blocks or similar materials greater than 2 m in height is braced from both sides until the wall is attached to a rigid structure and the mortar has set adequately [10].

IX. Inspections and Reporting

• Regular Inspections: Frequent and regular inspections of the job sites, materials, and equipment to be made by competent persons designated by the employers [4].

• Reporting: Any employee having knowledge of the existence of any unsafe device, practice, operation, safeguard, equipment, or condition shall promptly report it to the supervisor or person in charge [11].
