Personnel conducting testing and inspection of post-tensioning cables must use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate potential hazards. A hazard assessment should be performed to determine the necessary PPE for the task. [1]
Mandatory PPE generally includes:
- Head protection: Hard hats are required where there is a potential for falling objects, bumps to the head, or contact with electrical hazards.
- Eye and face protection: Safety glasses or face shields are necessary when work operations may cause foreign objects to enter the eye, such as during cutting, grinding, or when working with concrete or harmful chemicals. Goggles should be used when working around dust or chemicals, and face shields should be used to protect the face from particles and chemicals, with safety glasses worn underneath for high-impact protection.
- Hand protection: Workers should wear appropriate gloves for the job, such as heavy-duty rubber gloves for concrete work, welding gloves for welding, and insulated gloves and sleeves when exposed to electrical hazards. Gloves should fit properly and be rated for the specific task.
- Foot protection: Work shoes or boots with slip-resistant and puncture-resistant soles should be worn. Safety-toed footwear is required to prevent crushed toes when working around heavy equipment or falling objects.
- High-visibility garments: When duties are performed in close proximity to moving vehicles, employees must wear a high-visibility safety vest, shirt, or jacket that is fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, or fluorescent red in color. During hours of darkness, high-visibility garments designed according to ANSI/ISEA 107-1999 Class 2 specifications must be worn to provide 360 degrees of visibility.
[3] [3] [3] [2] [2] Employers are responsible for providing and paying for PPE, except for non-specialty safety-toe protective footwear and non-specialty prescription safety eyewear if the employer allows such items to be worn off the job site. [2] [2]
Employees must comply with job safety practices and PPE requirements relevant to the job site and ensure PPE is inspected regularly and properly maintained, replacing worn or damaged PPE. [2] [1] [1]
