Document Number: [SWP-NUMBER] Revision Date: [DATE] Next Review Date: [NEXT REVIEW DATE] Department: [DEPARTMENT NAME]
1. Scope
This Safe Work Procedure (SWP) outlines the necessary safety precautions and procedures for performing hot tapping operations on pressurized pipelines, vessels, or tanks. Hot tapping involves welding on a piece of equipment under pressure to install connections or appurtenances . This procedure applies when continuity of service is essential and shutdown of the system is impractical .
This SWP is applicable to all employees, contractors, and subcontractors involved in hot tapping activities. It covers work on transmission and distribution systems for substances such as gas, steam, water, or petroleum products .
This SWP should be used in conjunction with other relevant safety procedures, including but not limited to, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, welding, and fire prevention procedures.
2. Definitions

Electric Shock | Electrocution, burns | Ensure that arc welding performed in wet conditions or under conditions of high humidity has special protection against electric shock . |
Exposure to Toxic Coatings | Respiratory irritation, skin irritation | Strip all surfaces covered with toxic preservatives of all toxic coatings for a distance of at least 4 inches from the area of heat application, or protect employees by airline respirators . |
5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Proper PPE must be worn at all times during hot tapping operations to minimize the risk of injury 2, 4.
- Safety Glasses/Face Shield - Protects eyes and face from flying debris, sparks, and chemical splashes.

- Flame-Resistant Clothing - Protects the body from burns and heat exposure. Ensure clothing covers all exposed skin.
- Steel-Toed Boots - Protect feet from impact and compression hazards.
- Respiratory Protection - Use appropriate respirators (e.g., airline respirators) when working in enclosed spaces or when exposed to toxic substances .
Inspect all PPE before use for damage or defects. Replace damaged or worn PPE immediately. Clean and maintain PPE according to the manufacturer's instructions.
6. Equipment and Tools
Ensure that all equipment and tools are in good working condition and suitable for the task 2, 4.
- Hot Tapping Machine - Used to drill into the pressurized pipeline or equipment. Ensure the machine is of adequate design and capability for the process, conditions, pressure, and temperature 2, 4.
- Welding Machine - Used to weld the connection fitting to the pipeline or equipment. Ensure the welding machine is properly grounded and in good working condition .
- Cutting Torch - Used for cutting and preparing the area for welding. Inspect torches and fittings before use to ensure they are in a safe working condition .
- Grinder - Used for surface preparation and weld finishing. Ensure the grinder is equipped with a guard and is in good working condition.
- Hand Tools - Wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. Use appropriate hand tools for the task and ensure they are in good working condition.
Inspect all equipment and tools before each use. Remove any defective equipment from service. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper use and maintenance of all equipment and tools.
