Boom Lift Safety Checklist

This checklist is designed to ensure safe operation of boom lifts. Complete this checklist before each use. Any "No" answers require corrective action before operating the equipment.

I. Pre-Operation Inspection

• Documentation: Operator's manual is present and readable.
• Visual Inspection:
  • Check for any visible damage (cracks, dents, leaks).
  • Inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks or damage.
  • Wiring and electrical components are in good condition.
• Fluid Levels:
  • Hydraulic fluid level is within the recommended range.
  • Engine oil, coolant, and fuel levels are adequate.
• Tires/Wheels:
  • Tires are properly inflated and in good condition.
  • Wheel nuts are tightened to the correct torque.
• Safety Devices:
  • All safety devices (e.g., horns, lights, backup alarms) are functioning properly.
  • Emergency stop button is functional.
  • Outriggers/stabilizers (if equipped) are in good working order.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
  • Hard hat is available and in good condition.
  • Safety glasses or face shield are available.
  • Proper footwear is worn.
  • Fall protection harness and lanyard are inspected and in good condition.

II. Functional Tests

• Controls:
  • All controls are clearly labeled and function smoothly.
  • Boom and platform controls respond correctly.
• Movement:
  • Boom lift moves smoothly and without unusual noises.
  • Lifting and lowering mechanisms operate correctly.
  • Rotation functions as intended.
• Limit Switches:
  • Limit switches prevent over-extension and collisions.

III. Work Area Assessment

• Clearance:
  • Adequate clearance from obstacles, power lines, and other hazards.
  • Ground conditions are stable and level.
• Load Capacity:
  • Load does not exceed the boom lift's rated capacity.
  • Load is evenly distributed on the platform.
• Environmental Conditions:
  • Weather conditions (wind, rain, etc.) are suitable for safe operation.

IV. Operational Safety

• Safe Operating Procedures:
  • Follow all manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain a safe distance from hazards.
  • Never exceed the boom lift's maximum reach or load capacity.
• Fall Protection:
  • Always wear a full-body harness and lanyard secured to the designated anchor point.
  • Inspect fall protection equipment before each use.
• Communication:
  • Establish clear communication signals with ground personnel.

V. Post-Operation

• Park the boom lift on a level surface.
• Lower the boom completely.
• Turn off the engine and remove the key.
• Inspect the boom lift for any damage that may have occurred during operation.
• Report any issues or concerns to the supervisor.
