For cable guardrail systems, follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing and using U-bolt and double saddle type wire rope clips. If these specifications are unavailable, a competent person should determine the number of U-bolt clips and the installation torque required. Malleable cast-iron wire rope clips should not be used for hoisting or other critical applications unless approved by the manufacturer for that purpose. [1]
When using U-bolt clips, install them so that the U-bolt section bears on the short or dead end of the rope, while the saddle bears on the long or live end of the rope. Ensure the nuts are correctly torqued, and the number of clips and rope turn-back conform to the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. [2]
For double saddle or fist clips, ensure they are installed in numbers and with the amount of rope turn-back specified by the manufacturer. If double base clips are used, ensure that the clips are at least 6 rope diameters in length. [2]
Cable clips used for fastening wire rope should be installed and torqued to the manufacturer's specifications, or to the values specified in Schedule 5 in the absence of manufacturer's specifications. Double-saddle clips (fist clips) used for fastening wire rope are to be installed using the number and the spacing and torque that complies with the specifications in Schedule 5. Double-base clips used for fastening wire rope are to be installed with a spacing that is not less than 6 times the diameter of the rope. [3]
When installing U-bolt cable clips, the U-part goes over the dead end, while the live end rests in the clip saddle. Tighten the nuts evenly to the recommended torque. [5]
Ensure that wire ropes, sheaves, spools, and drums used in rigging have a diameter not less than the diameter specified by the manufacturer. The rope used in rigging should be the correct size for the sheave, spool, or drum over which it passes, and the grooving of wire rope sheaves should be the correct size for the wire rope used. End fittings and connectors used on a wire rope should conform to the manufacturer's specifications regarding number, size, and method of installation. Rigging blocks should be constructed and installed so that the ropes cannot jump off the sheaves. [4]
As a best practice, use at least three clips when making any prepared loop or thimble-eye termination for wire rope, especially for hoisting. All clips must be installed with the saddle part on the live end of the rope, allowing the live end to rest in the saddle so it's not crushed by the U-part of the clip. The U-part goes on the dead end of the rope where crushing will not affect the breaking strength of the hoist line. [5]
After installing the clips, apply tension and tighten all nuts to the recommended torque. Check the nut torque again after the rope has been in operation. [5]
When U-bolt wire rope clips are used for form eyes, the U-bolt should be applied so that the "U" section is in contact with the dead end of the rope. [6]
