This document outlines the safety guidelines and operational procedures for high-pressure pumping trucks, including hazard prevention and emergency response protocols. It is crucial for all personnel involved in the operation and maintenance of these trucks to understand and adhere to these guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
General Safety Procedures
General Safety
General safety procedures are paramount for the safe operation of high-pressure pumping trucks. These procedures encompass various aspects, including hydraulic safety, handling fluids under pressure, and servicing tires safely.
Hydraulic Safety
Hydraulic systems on high-pressure pumping trucks operate under significant pressure, and failure to follow safety guidelines can result in severe injuries. Hot hydraulic oil can cause severe burns. Therefore, it is imperative not to work on the hydraulic system if the oil temperature exceeds 120°F (49°C). [1]
Before commencing any work on the hydraulic system, the following steps must be taken:
- Lower boom to horizontal.
- Support boom to avoid unintentional lowering.
- Shutdown engine.
- Remove key from ignition.
- Clean area around reservoir cap (A).
Fluids Under Pressure
The high-pressure systems in pumping trucks contain fluids that, if released improperly, can cause serious injury. Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious personal injury. [1]
To prevent injury from fluids under pressure, adhere to the following guidelines:
- Use a piece of cardboard or paper to search for leaks. DO NOT use hands.
- Before disconnecting lines, be sure to relieve all pressure.
- Before applying pressure to the system, ensure that all connections are tight.
- DO NOT apply pressure to a damaged line, hose or fitting.
- If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Proper medical treatment must be administered immediately. A serious infection or reaction can result without proper medical treatment.
Servicing Tires Safely
Tire servicing can be hazardous due to the potential for tire explosions. An improperly mounted over-pressurized tire can result in tire explosion causing possible personal injury. [1]
To ensure safety while servicing tires:
- An inflation cage or other safety device must be used during tire inflation.
- DO NOT attempt to mount a tire unless you have the proper equipment and experience to perform the job. If you do not have the proper qualifications to perform the job have your dealer or qualified repair service perform the repair.
