Operating aerial lifts
Generated on: June 8, 2025

When operating aerial lifts, several safety measures should be followed. Only authorized or trained personnel should operate an aerial lift 2, 3. Before use, lift controls must be tested each day to ensure they are in safe working condition 2, 3. Employees must stand firmly on the floor of the basket and not sit or climb on the edge, or use planks, ladders, or other devices for a work position 1, 3. A personal fall arrest or travel restraint system should be worn and attached to the boom or basket [1]. Exceeding the boom and basket load limits specified by the manufacturer is prohibited 1, 3. Brakes must be set, and outriggers, when used, should be positioned on pads or a solid surface. Wheel chocks should be installed before using an aerial lift on an incline 1, 3. An aerial lift truck should not be moved when the boom is elevated with personnel in the basket, unless the equipment is specifically designed for that type of operation 1, 3. Before moving an aerial lift for travel, inspect the boom(s) to ensure it is properly cradled and outriggers are in the stowed position 1, 3.

Belting off to an adjacent pole, structure, or equipment while working from an aerial lift is not permitted 1, 3. Climbers should not be worn while performing work from an aerial lift 1, 3. The insulated portion of an aerial lift should not be altered in any way that might reduce its insulating value 1, 3.

Ensure the aerial device conforms to CSA standard C225-M88 or is certified in writing by an engineer as safe for elevating personnel [2]. If working from a moving boom, use a fall-arresting system attached to an anchor point provided by the manufacturer or approved by an engineer [3].

When leaving an aerial device unattended, ensure it is locked or fully lowered and retracted [4]. The manufacturer's operating manual should always be with the equipment, and all operating and maintenance instructions must be followed 8, 11.
