Portable fire extinguishers should be inspected periodically and maintained in accordance with Maintenance and Use of Portable Fire Extinguishers, NFPA No. 10A-1970 [1]. The employer is ultimately responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and testing of portable fire extinguishers 5, 14. This can be done in-house if the employer ensures the persons doing the work have been trained to do so and recognize potential problems 12, 14. Fire fighting equipment should be maintained and inspected at least annually to assure the safe operational condition of the equipment [2]. Portable fire extinguishers and respirators should be inspected at least monthly [2]. Defective equipment should be immediately replaced [3].
