Slips, Trips, and Falls Prevention
Slips, trips, and falls are major causes of workplace injuries. Implementing effective safety procedures and preventative measures is crucial to minimize these risks and ensure a safe working environment.
General Safety Procedures
Good housekeeping practices are essential in preventing slips, trips, and falls. This includes maintaining clear and organized work areas, promptly cleaning up spills, and ensuring walkways are free from obstructions.
Specific Preventative Measures
Floor and Surface Maintenance
Regularly inspect parking lots and other walking surfaces for damage such as broken pavement and gratings, and repair any defects promptly. A smooth, even, flat surface is ideal for walking because it reduces the likelihood of twisted ankles or loss of balance which can lead to falls and other painful mishaps. [2] [2]
Spill Control
Clean up spilled fuel immediately to prevent fires and slips. Prevent fires by keeping the machine clean of trash, grease and debris. [5] [5]
Footwear
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the task, including footwear. [3]
Walking Practices
When getting on and off equipment, always maintain a three-point contact with steps and handrails while facing the machine. Never jump off equipment, and be careful of slippery conditions on platforms, steps, and handrails. [5] [5] [5]
Slips and falls can cause serious injury. [5]
Housekeeping
Keep work areas clear of clutter and equipment. [3]
Specific Work Environments
Wet Environments
Plumbers face slips, trips, and falls, especially when working in wet environments. [4]
Sewage Exposure
When working with sewage, avoid exposure by wearing gloves, coveralls, rubber boots, and eye protection. Wash hands and decontaminate equipment after use. Do not eat or drink while working in a potentially contaminated area, and always wash hands before meals. After working with raw sewage or soil, wash immediately with soap and water, avoiding the use of solvents which can cause irritation and skin infections. [1] [1] [1]
Training and Awareness
Training on potential hazards at job sites is essential. Follow company safety rules and know how to report a hazard. [4] [4] [4]
Shift Work Considerations
Follow a recommended shift work pattern and be aware of associated hazards. [1] [3]
