Grinder Safety Checklist

This checklist is designed to ensure safe operation of grinders. Complete each item before, during, and after using a grinder. Initial and date each completed step. Any 'No' answers require corrective action before proceeding.

I. Pre-Operation Inspection

• 1. PPE: Safety glasses or face shield are worn [1]. Action if No: Do not operate grinder until proper eye protection is obtained.
• 2. PPE: Gloves are worn [1]. Action if No: Obtain and wear appropriate gloves.
• 3. PPE: Dust mask or respirator is worn, especially in poorly ventilated areas 12, 15. Action if No: Obtain and wear appropriate respiratory protection.
• 4. Equipment: Grinder is clean and free of any obstructions.
• 5. Equipment: Grinding wheel is approved for the grinder's RPM and in good condition (no cracks or chips).
• 6. Equipment: Wheel is properly mounted and secured.
• 7. Equipment: All guards are in place and properly adjusted.
• 8. Work Area: Work area is clear of obstructions and tripping hazards.
• 9. Material Safety: Ensure there are no incompatible materials in the surrounding area 3, 9.

II. During Operation

• 1. Technique: Use the correct grinding wheel for the material being ground.
• 2. Technique: Apply consistent, moderate pressure. Avoid excessive force.
• 3. Technique: Keep the workpiece moving to prevent overheating.
• 4. Environment: Ensure adequate ventilation to avoid inhalation of dust or vapours 2, 3, 9, 10, 11.
• 5. Housekeeping: Clean the surrounding area to prevent dust accumulation [2].

III. Post-Operation

• 1. Equipment: Turn off and disconnect the grinder.
• 2. Equipment: Allow the grinding wheel to come to a complete stop before leaving the area.
• 3. Housekeeping: Clean the grinder and work area.
• 4. Storage: Store the grinder in a safe and dry location.

IV. Emergency Procedures

• 1. First Aid: Know the location of the first aid kit and eyewash station [1].
• 2. Emergency Contacts: Emergency contact information is readily available.
• 3. Spill control: Ensure you have absorbing material, organic, or sand to limit leakages 1, 5, 6, 7, 9, 18.
