What PPE is required when testing post tension cables?
For testing post-tension cables, PPE must be selected through a documented task-specific hazard assessment and used only after engineering and administrative controls have been applied. Because post-tension work involves stored energy, potential cable or anchorage failure, flying particles, struck-by hazards, pinch points, and possible traffic or equipment exposure, the employer should evaluate each testing, stressing, and detensioning step, identify affected body parts, and specify required PPE for the crew and any observers. - Mandatory baseline PPE for post-tension cable testing should normally include a hard hat, safety glasses with side shields, sturdy work gloves suited to the handling task, and safety footwear with safety toes; add face protection, hearing protection, high-visibility garments, and other PPE when the hazard assessment shows exposure.
- Use enhanced eye/face protection when there is any possibility of wire strand breakage, flying wedges, chips, dust, hydraulic fitting failure, or other projectile hazards. A face shield should be worn with safety glasses or goggles, not as a substitute for them.
- Use head protection whenever there is potential for falling objects, swinging tools or hardware, or accidental head contact with equipment.
- Use hand protection selected for mechanical hazards such as cuts, punctures, abrasions, bruises, and pinch points from strand, wedges, jacks, hoses, and anchorage hardware.
- Use safety-toe footwear with slip-resistant and puncture-resistant soles; upgrade to metatarsal protection if there is a credible crush hazard from heavy jacks, stressing equipment, or hardware.
- Use high-visibility garments if testing is performed near moving vehicles or mobile equipment, and follow site traffic-control requirements.
- Add hearing protection if hydraulic pumps, impact work, or adjacent operations create high noise exposure.

Tendons, wedges, anchorages, couplers, jacks, and hoses can fail suddenly and violently during stressing or detensioning. Establish a written procedure that defines the stressing sequence, jack setup, pressure verification, communication method, and emergency stop criteria. Only essential, trained personnel should be allowed inside the danger area during loading or release. No one should stand in line with the tendon, directly behind the jack, or in any predicted recoil or projectile path. Barricade and mark exclusion zones at both stressing and dead ends, and expand them when multiple tendons are being worked, access is uncontrolled, or components are deteriorated or suspect. - Before stressing or detensioning, inspect the tendon identification, stressing records, jack capacity, gauge calibration status, hose condition, couplers, wedges, anchorage hardware, bearing surfaces, and any signs of corrosion, broken wires, deformation, or misalignment.
- Do not begin testing if any component is damaged, mismatched, leaking, out of calibration, or not rated for the intended load.
- Inspect PPE before use and remove damaged PPE from service immediately.
- Hard hats should be checked for dents, cracks, deterioration, or prior impact damage; replace after a heavy blow or electrical shock.
- Verify that eye and face protection is appropriate for impact hazards and that gloves fit properly and do not create entanglement risk.
- Confirm that barricades, warning signs, and access controls are in place before load is applied or released.

- PPE does not make it safe to stand in the line of fire of a stressed tendon. Exclusion, positioning, barricading, and controlled release procedures are essential.
