1. Scope
This Safe Work Procedure (SWP) outlines the safety requirements and procedures for all welding operations. It applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors who are involved in or present during welding activities. This SWP covers but is not limited to arc welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, and spot welding. It includes guidelines for personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilation, fire prevention, and safe work practices.
2. Definitions
Welding A process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing fusion, which is distinct from lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as brazing and soldering, which do not melt the base metal. Welding Machine Equipment used to supply the electricity needed to create an electric arc between an electrode and the base material to melt the metals at the welding point. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Safety glasses, face shields, welding helmets, gloves, and protective clothing designed to protect welders from burns, radiation, and fumes. Ventilation The process of removing or diluting contaminants with fresh air, which includes fumes and gases generated during welding.
3. Responsibilities
3.1 Supervisors
- Ensure that all workers are properly trained and competent to perform welding operations.
- Provide and maintain all necessary PPE, equipment, and tools in good working order.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of welding operations to ensure compliance with safety procedures.
- Investigate all incidents and near misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Enforce all safety rules and regulations.
3.2 Workers
- Inspect welding equipment before use to ensure it is in good working condition.
- Use the correct welding techniques for the materials being joined.
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times during welding operations.
- Ensure adequate ventilation is present to remove fumes and gases.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines outlined in this document.
- Report any incidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions to the supervisor immediately.

5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Welding Helmet: Provides eye protection from arc flash, sparks, and debris. Select the correct shade number for the welding process.
- Safety Glasses: Protects the eyes from UV radiation and flying particles. Use in conjunction with a welding helmet or face shield.
- Welding Gloves: Provides hand and arm protection from heat, sparks, and cuts. Gauntlet style is recommended.
- Protective Clothing (e.g., leather apron, jacket): Protects the body from sparks, heat, and UV radiation. Leather or flame-resistant cotton clothing is recommended.
- Steel-Toed Boots: Protects feet from falling objects and sparks. Leather steel-toed boots are recommended.
- Respirator: Used when adequate ventilation is not available to protect against inhalation of welding fumes and gases. Select the appropriate filter for the specific contaminants.
6. Equipment and Tools
- Welding Machine (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW): Used to create an electric arc for welding. Ensure it is properly grounded and maintained.
- Electrode Holder: Used to hold the electrode during welding. Inspect for damage before each use.
- Chipping Hammer: Used to clean the weld area and remove slag. Wear safety glasses when using.
- Angle Grinder: Used to clean welds and prepare surfaces. Ensure the wheel is in good condition and the guard is in place.
- Measuring Tools (Tape Measure, Square): Used to measure and mark materials for welding. Ensure accuracy before cutting or welding.
8. Safe Work Procedure Steps
- Pre-Job Briefing: Review this SWP and the SDS for all materials being used. Ensure you understand the hazards and controls.
- Equipment Inspection: Ensure the welding machine is in good working order and properly grounded. Inspect cables for damage and replace if necessary.
- Fire Prevention Measures: Clear the area of flammable materials. Use fire-resistant blankets or screens to protect surrounding areas. Have a fire extinguisher readily available.
- Ventilation Setup: Ensure adequate ventilation is present. Use local exhaust ventilation or a respirator if necessary.
- Don PPE: Wear all required PPE, including a welding helmet, safety glasses, gloves, and protective clothing.
- Workpiece Positioning: Position the workpiece securely. Use clamps or other devices to prevent movement during welding.
- Welding: Strike an arc and begin welding using the appropriate technique for the material and welding process. Maintain a consistent arc length and travel speed.
- Post-Weld Cleaning and Inspection: After welding, clean the weld area with a chipping hammer and wire brush. Inspect the weld for defects.
- Cool Down and Fire Watch: Allow the workpiece to cool. Inspect the area for hot spots and potential fire hazards.
- Equipment Storage: Store welding equipment and materials in a safe and organized manner.
9. Precautions and Safety Measures
- Never weld in wet or damp conditions to avoid the risk of electric shock.
- Ensure that the welding area is clear of obstructions and tripping hazards.
- Do not weld on containers that have held flammable materials unless they have been properly cleaned and purged.
- Always disconnect the welding machine from the power source when not in use.
- Be aware of the location of fire alarms and emergency exits.

10. Emergency Procedures
10.1 General Emergency Response
In the event of any emergency, immediately stop welding operations. Assess the situation and ensure your safety and the safety of others. Activate the nearest fire alarm and evacuate the area if necessary. Provide first aid to any injured persons and call for medical assistance if required.
10.2 Specific Emergency Scenarios
- Fire: Extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher or fire hose. If the fire is too large to extinguish, evacuate the area and call the fire department.
- Electric Shock: Immediately shut off the welding machine and provide first aid. Seek medical attention if necessary.
- Burns: Move the injured person to a safe area and provide first aid. Call for medical assistance immediately.
- Explosion: Evacuate the area and call emergency services immediately. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire yourself.
11. Incident Reporting and Investigation
All incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions must be reported to the supervisor immediately. The supervisor will complete an incident report and submit it to the safety department.
The safety department will investigate all reported incidents to determine the root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
