To ensure the safety and longevity of your Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP), inspections should be performed at multiple intervals [1]. A "frequent inspection" should be done daily to monthly [1]. A "periodic inspection" should be done every 1 to 12 months [1].
Daily inspections include checking functional operating mechanisms for maladjustment and looking for deterioration or leakage in air or hydraulic systems [1]. Hooks should be visually inspected daily for deformation or cracks, with a more thorough monthly inspection that includes a signed report [1].
Additionally, a thorough inspection of all ropes in use should occur at least once a month, with a written, dated, and signed report of the rope's condition kept on file 12, 14, 16. This inspection should note any deterioration that results in a noticeable loss of original strength 12, 14, 16.
Before operating the MEWP, perform a walk-around inspection 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Mounting and dismounting areas should be inspected, and any necessary repairs should be made 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Also, accumulated grease and oil should be removed with steam cleaning or high-pressure water at least every 1000 hours, or each time a significant quantity of oil is spilled on the machine 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
After any adjustments or repairs, ensure all guards have been reinstalled and safety devices reactivated before resuming operation 12, 14, 16. Any unsafe conditions discovered during inspections must be corrected before the MEWP is used again 12, 14, 16.
Important Safety Note:
Always verify safety information with your organization's specific guidelines and local regulations.
